A Vision Quest may last a day, a week, or a month. One goes alone in nature with just water and perhaps a blanket. The individual forms a sacred circle of stones on the ground and remains in the circle for a specific period of time. No food is consumed during the quest and often one does not sleep. During this time one will use personal ceremonies to open the heart and soul. Time is spent in deep meditation, contemplation, and observation. Sometimes, but not always, a vision occurs. The meaning may not be revealed until a later date.

The typical quest lasts for three to four days. Often individuals hold an all night vigil, usually on the last night.

During a quest, it is important to periodically have someone check on the person crying for a vision. Usually an area is specified and fresh water is placed daily. Some predetermined sign is used to acknowledge the well being of the participant.
