Throughout history human beings have turned to nature to receive insight and self-awareness. Insight often occurs when the senses are flooded with the beauty of nature. While walking slowly in nature, one leaves everyday cares and concerns behind and becomes completely encompassed in the present moment. Solitary time in the natural world can have a profound and long lasting effect on individuals who are willing to embark on this sacred journey.

The Medicine Walk, an abbreviated form of Vision Quest, is a simple process and there are no set rules. However, one must approach the experience will awareness and preparation. Finding a location which provides solitude is essential. One must get away from the hustle and noise of everyday life. If at all possible, one should arrive at the location before sunrise.

Before beginning one should take time to become centered and acquaint oneself with their surroundings. Some people have a specific question. If so, the question should be spoken out loud at least once to make the intention as clear as possible. Some people go on a Medicine Walk for the sole purpose of taking a mental vacation in nature. This is a great way to reduce stress. One should not bring expectations on a Medicine Walk. While walking in silence, follow impulses and instincts. Let them become the guide. Listen to the sounds of nature and follow the pull. A simple rock, tree, or even insect may become the center of your attention. Listen closely for the message. The Medicine Walk is about symbolic awareness, verbal answers will not be received.

Always end a Medicine Walk with a gesture of gratitude. Take a few moments to breathe deeply the fresh air before returning to normal awareness. Experiences should be written down immediately. If answers are not received don’t feel distressed. Sometimes dramatic insights come long after the Medicine Walk.
