Birding in North Carolina

RiverMist is located in the Mountain Region of the North Carolina Birding Trail. The trails along the private 125 acre site include:
The large canopy of laurel and rhododendron along the river provides protection and nesting opportunities for a wide variety of birds: heron, osprey, kingfishers, ducks, and geese. If your timing is right, you’ll see an osprey dive for dinner or a bald eagle soar above.
It is common to see many varieties of hawks, owls, sparrows, swallows, and woodpeckers, including the pileated woodpecker. Peregrine Falcons are often seen in the area.
Cardinals, wrens, bluebirds, indigo buntings, doves, blue jays and mockingbirds (& pesky squirrels) eat from the feeders on the front lawn. Finches and hummingbirds feed (& fight) within a few feet of our cabin. Wild turkey frequent the area and help with insect control in our organic garden.
Walk the trails or paddle on the river. In the evening, sit by a campfire and listen to the night sounds of the whip-poor-will and Chuck-will’s-widow.
